President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad expounded on important international and regional issues in a speech given to academics at the prestigious University of Columbia in New York on Monday [Sept 24th 2007]. He later met with a group of Jewish rabbis who gave him a silver grail as a sign of friendship.
Addressing the US National Press Club he remarked:
“Giving false information about Iran is far beyond the responsibility of mass media.” As for women’s status in Iran, President Ahmadinejad said, “Iranian women are freest in the world and engaged in different scientific, social, media, political and artistic activities.
He also spoke at the United Nations General Assembly where he made these remarks concerning women and the family:
In some societies, this beloved human has been reduced to a mere instrument of publicity, and all the boundaries and protective shields of chastity, purity and beauty have been trampled. This is a colossal betrayal of human society, of succeeding generations, and an irreparable blow to the pillar of social coherence, the family.
Speaking to about 100 US and Canadian religious leaders. He made the following remarks:
Ahmadinejad emphasized, “We hate criminal acts, and feel sorry for the catastrophic events of World War I and World War II, hating the people that created those crimes,” adding, “I have posed two questions regarding Palestine and Israel, in a bid to dry out the roots of the Middle East conflict.”
The Iranian political leader said, “My first question was why you do not permit launching any research works on this matter, which is actually defending the human rights in Europe, and defending the rights of the scientists.”
The president added, “My second question, too, was why we do not permit the Palestinians to decide about their own fate?”
The president if the IRI went on to Bolivia and Venezuela in the latter half of the week.
